Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Review

The Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. is a superzoom lens for the steadily growing Micro Four Thirds system. Featuring near-silent, high-speed focusing thanks to an inner focus direct-drive linear motor, the Panasonic 14-140mm lens is ideally suited for recording video and ships in kit form with the DMC-GH1/2 cameras as well as being available stand-alone. Offering a focal range of 28-280mm in 35mm terms, this 10x zoom lens uses four aspherical lenses and two ED lenses to achieve a compact length of 84mm and weight of 460g, whilst still featuring MEGA O.I.S. to help combat camera shake. Seven blades help give the aperture a rounded shape and it also has a reliable metal mount and multi-coated lens elements. The Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens costs £869.00 / $849.95 in the UK and the US, respectively.

The LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. is surprisingly small and light for a superzoom lens covering a 35mm equivalent focal range of 28-280mm. Zoomed out to the 14mm setting, the lens practically fits in the palm of your hand.

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Zoomed out and zoomed in

Zooming is not internal – as you can see, the front extends considerably upon zooming to 280mm, at which point the lens cannot be considered tiny any more. Still, it's a pretty compact affair for a lens that spans such a vast focal range. It's also light at just over 450 grams, although that's nearly 40% heavier than the other Micro Four Thirds superzoom, the M.ZUIKO Digital 14-150mm f/4-5.6 ED.

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Front of lens, isometric view

In terms of features, the lens offers a switch for turning image stabilisation on or off, one of the main reasons why it is so much heavier than the above-mentioned Olympus lens.

The LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens may have a lot of plastic parts, but the lens mount is, thankfully, made of metal. Panasonic does not claim any sort of weather resistance for this lens, and indeed you cannot see a rubber seal around the mount (note that no current Micro Four Thirds camera is weather sealed anyway).

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Rear of lens, isometric view

Usefully the lens comes with a hood and a cloth storage bag, and it accepts 62mm filters.

At the 100mm end of the zoom range, the lens has a diagonal angle of view of 75°, equivalent to that of a 200mm lens in a 35mm system.

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Field of view at 14mm

At the 140mm end, the angle of view is 8.8°, which is the same as that of a 280mm lens on a 35mm full-frame camera.

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. Field of view at 140mm

The LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens offers virtually silent focusing. In use, we have also found the system very, very quick on the DMC-GH2, certainly faster than other Micro Four Thirds lenses. With the focus mode on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 set to AFC, the lens tracked moving subjects well.

The 62mm filter thread does not rotate on focus, which is good news for users of polarisers and graduated neutral density filters.

Manual focusing is possible in a focus-by-wire fashion. This should not put you off using it as it feels pretty natural in use, and actually enables the camera to display a magnified view of the subject automatically, i.e. without your having to press a dedicated button or enter the menu. The focus ring is slim but adequate for the job.

Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, can be a bit of a problem with this lens, particularly when used wide open in the telephoto range. The crops below are from photos taken at the 28mm and 280mm settings. These results are far from disastrous though, and not unexpected on a long zoom like this.

With the lens set to its maximum aperture, you can see some light fall-off in the corners, but nothing excessive. You will likely only notice this when photographing a subject with large homogeneous surfaces (see the macro shot below for an example).

Although Panasonic does not call this a macro lens, it actually puts up a pretty good close-up performance, with a maximum 0.4x magnification rating and able to focus at 50cms away from the subject. Our test shot, which was taken at f/4, shows a bit of softness at close inspection, but stopping down to f/5.6 cures this problem.

The Rollei Designline 3D is a 7-nch digital frame that can display three-dimensional photos. Shipping in a bundle with the “Blaze Video Magic 3.0” software that helps to convert 2D images into 3D pictures, the Rollei Desingline 3D is otherwise a standard 800x480-pixel digital photo frame with integrated stereo speakers, and doubles as an e-book reader. The frame will be hit the shops in January at a price of €299.95.

Rollei Press Release

Rollei’s 7-inch Designline 3D digital picture frame draws its viewers into the third dimension and shows 3D pictures with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. It’s practical: The scope of delivery include the “Blaze Video Magic 3.0” software that helps to convert 2D images into 3D pictures or videos with just a few mouse clicks on the computer. It is possible to emit an AV-Out signal via TV cable.

Besides its 3D function, the Designline 3D provides innumerable other features that go far beyond the performance of other digital picture frames. For example, the 16:9 frame plays MP3 files via integrated stereo speakers and has an E-book function. In slide show mode, there are seven different speeds to choose from for designing the transition effects. Thanks to an integrated rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 3 hours of runtime, Rollei’s 3D digital frame can also be used very flexibly in the room.

The frame design with its black decorative pattern makes it a highlight – regardless of whether it is on a shelf, on the living room wall or travelling with you. It can be optionally operated with an infrared remote control or a touch menu, which only becomes visible when you touch the right edge of the frame.

Leica S2 Firmware Update 1.0.0.24

« Back to news

News image

Leica has released a new firmware update for the Leica S-System. Version 1.0.0.24 enables a multitude of enhanced camera functions, including lossless DNG compression, maximum exposure time of 125 seconds, shutter speed section in bulb mode, and a setting option for highlight and shadow level warnings.

Leica Camera AG Press Release

Solms, Germany (December 22, 2010) - Leica Camera AG has released a new firmware update for the Leica S-System. All LEICA S2 and S2-P cameras will now be supplied with the latest firmware version. Users wishing to bring their camera up-to-date can now download the firmware update from the “Owners Area” on the Leica website and take advantage of the latest improvements.

“Our close cooperation with photographers gives us not only an opportunity to constantly develop and improve the Leica S-System, but also allows us to address the precise needs of professional photographers. Therefore, the latest update, FW 1.0.0.24, includes quite a number of suggestions and wishes determined during discussions with professional users. The result is a wide range of improvements for applications, features and functions as well as the handling of the S2,” reports Stephan Schulz, product manager for the Leica S-System at Leica Camera AG.

The FW 1.0.0.24 firmware update enables a multitude of enhanced camera functions. These include, for instance, lossless DNG compression. This offers particular benefits by reducing file sizes from around 75MB to around 40MB and increasing the burst-rate capability to 14 consecutive exposures (at 1.5 frames per second). Both of these factors depend on the image content. At the same time, DNG compression leads to faster file-saving and transfer times when shooting tethered. Further new features of the firmware update are a new maximum exposure time of 125 seconds, shutter speed section in bulb mode (with the new firmware, the setting wheel can now be used to select the shutter speeds directly) and a setting option for highlight and shadow level warnings.

Existing camera functions have also been improved in the firmware update FW 1.0.0.24. This applies, for instance, to the histogram display in automatic review mode. This display option has now been enlarged for improved legibility. Furthermore, the update also allows the expansion of memory card compatibility to include 64GB UDMA6 cards and offers additional setting options for the AF/AE memory button. Autofocus precision has increased even more and focusing on very small subject details is, above all, greatly improved now.

The Rollei Powerflex 3D is a new 5-megapixel digital compact camera featuring a pair of lenses for three-dimensional photography. The camera has a 2.8” rear screen that uses Parallax Barrier Display technology to display the photographs in 3D, without the user’s having to wear any special glasses. Those who want to see their 3D works in bigger size can hook the camera up to any 3D television set but in that case they will need to be wearing the 3D glasses supplied with the TV. Available in January for €299.95, the Rollei Powerflex 3D can also capture normal two-dimensional photos as well as HD movies.

Rollei Press Release

Plunge into the world of 3D with Rollei

Hamburg, 23 December 2010

Rollei is getting started in the third dimension in 2011 by presenting its first-ever products for an impressive 3D experience with the Powerflex 3D digicam and the Designline 3D digital picture frame. Rollei’s new 3D devices are equipped with the special Parallax Barrier Display technology, so that you can marvel at three-dimensional pictures and videos without any special glasses whatsoever.

With Rollei’s new Powerflex 3D, it is possible to easily produce three-dimensional photographic and video works of art by yourself.  Two lenses that work simultaneously with 1/2.5” CMOS image sensors record 3D pictures with a maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944.  Videos can be shot in brilliant HD quality (1280x720) at 30 images per second. The pictures appear on the 2.8 inch LCD display with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels in such a way that each one of the observer’s eyes sees a slightly displaced image, which is then automatically merged into a three-dimensional image. This effect provides 3D enjoyment without glasses.

The two-eye, 5-megapixel Powerflex can naturally also photograph and film in 2D. An 8x digital zoom is available in 2D mode as well. Pressing a button on the camera switches between 3D and 2D shooting modes. You can make use of technical features, such as the digital image stabiliser and the manually adjustable white balance, in both shooting modes. But the technical features are not the only reason why you won’t ever want to do without your Powerflex 3D. The camera’s slim design and the intuitive menu navigation are also very persuasive.

Anyone who would like to admire his own 3D works on a large scale can easily connect the Powerflex 3D to a 3D TV set or monitor thanks to the HDMI connector and TV output (PAL/NTSC). With the help of the special glasses that belong to the respective screen, you can dive into the 3D world that you photographed yourself.

Child Photography ? The Power of a Fake Laugh

type="html">

You know what? It’s totally cool to fake a laugh while having your photo taken and I encourage my clients (especially children) to try it. It feels really stupid, but it pays off big.

To get my kid clients to laugh, it usually just takes a poop joke or anything silly but sometimes, they just freeze up. So I encourage them to fake laugh. “It’s ok,” I say… “I know I’m rubbish at telling jokes. Tell you what how about we just pretend laugh?” And you can’t make your subjects feel stupid alone – you have to throw the first few out there! Sometimes your crazy, maniacal throw-your-head-back fake laugh is enough to make them laugh for real. And sometimes, it just shows them that it’s ok to look like an idiot.

All the laughs on this page are fake. And yes they all felt stupid but they also paid off in the end!

Great tip for fake laughing: Ask you kids to hold their arms across their belly (like when you’re holding your belly in a for-real gut busting laugh). And then when they laugh for real or pretend, it will look even larger on camera.
