Waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof, the TG610 and TG310 can shoot 14 megapixel still photos with the dramatic realism of 3D, have 5x and 3x zooms respectively, and feature Eye-Fi card compatibility. The TG-610 also comes with automatic Underwater Snapshot Mode and a large, 920,000 dot, high-resolution HyperCrystal III LCD. The Olympus TG-610 is available in silver, black, blue and red for £250 / €249, and the Olympus TG-310 in silver, blue, red, white and orange for £200 / €199, both available from February 2011.

Even deep underwater, a sliding double lock mechanism protects the battery, card slots and ports while an additional lens barrier (metal on the TG-610, hard glass on the TG-310) safeguards the optical zoom lens. Thanks to this doubly tough protection, the TG-610 is waterproof to fully five metres, the TG-310 to an impressive three metres. Both cameras are freezeproof to -10°C (14°F) and shockproof to a height of 1.5 metres, so there’s no need to worry when young children get hold of them and decide to play catch, submarines or ‘let’s hide stuff in the freezer’.

You don’t have to take an OLYMPUS TOUGH TG-610 outside to appreciate it’s outstanding build and image quality – but it’s outside that the technology really comes into its own. Whether it’s the local pool or a tropical reef, the Automatic Underwater White Balance feature optimises settings like white balance to deliver Cousteau-like shots of life beneath the waves. It’s also outside that the three inch, 920,000 dot Super Precision HyperCrystal III LCD for TOUGH comes into play. This high-resolution, ultra scratch-resistant display delivers beautifully bright and clear images that are a joy to share – even in direct sunlight. A special layer in the LCD cuts down reflection for better visibility, so it’s easier to frame, review and share movies and stills. An impressive optical zoom is another bonus in the open air. For those close-ups that make action shots special, the TG-610 comes with a 5x wide optical zoom (28-140mm**) while the TG-310 boasts a 3.6x wide optical zoom (28-102mm**).
