MIT develops camera that can see around things

type="html">

This is a concept camera from MIT, which has the uncanny ability to capture images of things that aren’t in view.

Any camera can do that with a mirror, but this one uses a high shutterspeed of one quadrillionth of a second, Which can somehow get an image off an object like the door that you see in this picture.

At this stage, the images are somewhat fuzzy, but work is being done on sharpening them up as much as possible. I suppose we’ll be seeing more of this later if they can get it down to something that works.

The Browns' Cottage Novella House Tour

Name: Jess, Erio, Stella & Tiger Brown (& Shorty the dog)

Location: West Petaluma — CA

Size: 1300 square feet

Years lived in: 7 — Owned

While some peoples homes speak pages about them, the Browns' home is a vintage encyclopedia set. A set that is hued in the colors of the Sahara desert at sunset, with well worn tea stained pages that only the passage of time and care can create. Their charming cottage is filled with family antiques, vintages pieces found through many years of flea marketing, with a few modern pieces thrown into the plot.

iStop Motion 2.5 for Mac OS

« Back to news

News image

Boinx Software today announced the availability of iStopMotion 2.5, a stop-motion animation and time-lapse capture application that now features a brand new tilt/shift filter. A bit of a misnomer, the “tilt-shift” filter helps users achieve a miniature-scale model effect in their time-lapse sequences. (To clarify, you can achieve a similar effect with a tilt lens, but a tilt/shift lens is a more complex tool that can be used for other purposes too, including perspective control.) Additional product updates include full support for new Canon DSLR camera models and HDV camera support in iStopMotion Pro when Logic Studio or Final Cut Studio is installed. Version 2.5 also boasts a new ‘Send to iMovie’ functionality in the file menu, for quick and easy export of your stop motion animations to iMovie 8 or later. iStopMotion 2.5 is available now via the website below. The update to version 2.5 is free for all current owners of a valid iStopMotion 2 licence.

Boinx Press Release

iStopMotion - Meet Tilt Shift

Boinx Software today announced the availability of iStopMotion 2.5, the company’s popular stop motion animation and time-lapse capture application. Headlining the new update is the innovative combination of a brand new Tilt Shift Filter with stop motion animation and time-lapse recording. Additional product updates include full support for new Canon DSLR camera models and HDV camera support in iStopMotion Pro when Logic Studio or Final Cut Studio is installed.

Puchheim, Germany - Boinx Software, a multi-award winning developer of cool software for the Mac platform, today announced the availability of iStopMotion 2.5, the company’s popular stop motion animation application. Headlining the new update is the innovative combination of a brand new Tilt Shift Filter with stop motion animation and time-lapse recording. A popular effect among photographers aiming to capture a “miniature-scale model” effect, Tilt Shift is perfect for stop motion animation’s small movements and individually photographed frames. This unique pairing of Tilt Shift with stop motion and time-lapse recording software allows animators to expand creative expression, manipulating the depth of field of their images so that life-sized locations or subjects appear miniature in size. “By adding the new Tilt Shift effect to stop motion and time-lapse movies, an animator’s creative expression can take a giant leap forward,” comments Oliver Breidenbach, CEO, Boinx Software.

iStopMotion 2.5 Product Updates:
Additional product updates include full support for new Canon DSLR camera models and HDV camera support in iStopMotion Pro when Logic Studio(R) or Final Cut Studio(R) is installed. Version 2.5 boasts a new ‘Send to iMovie’ functionality in the file menu, for quick and easy export of your stop motion animations to iMovie 8 or later. Enhanced color correction functionalities in iStopMotion 2.5 Express and Pro allow users to adjust the atmospheric settings of a shot - right at the time of capture. Breidenbach further comments, “This release emphasizes our commitment to empowering the creative user, from Kindergarten to movie studio. The combination of new Tilt Shift functionalities with our flexible stop motion animation and time-lapse recording software is like a triple treat for animators of all levels - the results are out of this world!” To view an example of iStopMotion 2.5’s new Tilt Shift functionalities see the video.

Availability and Pricing:
iStopMotion 2.5 is available now via the link provided. The update to version 2.5 is FREE for all current owners of a valid iStopMotion 2 license. A built-in assistant will guide users through the process of acquiring the proper license. iStopMotion 2.5 Home is available for $49, iStopMotion 2.5 Express is available for $99 and iStopMotion 2.5 Pro is available for $499 via Kagi. (Price quoted in US$ excl. sales tax or VAT as applies. Check the Kagi Store for quotes in local currencies). For all purchase options see the purchase link.

About iStopMotion:
Boinx iStopMotion is the leading solution for stop motion animation and time-lapse capture, and won the O’Reilly Mac OS X Innovators Award in 2003. iStopMotion 2.5 is available in three flavors: Home, Express and Pro. The Home edition is for the casual user, the typical family where the parents want to have fun with the kids while providing them with a productive, creative and educational experience. The Express version appeals to the animation aficionado, who wants the features of the Pro version except those only needed in a professional production environment. The Pro version is for the professional animator who uses iStopMotion in a production workflow, creating animations for commercials, music videos or in HD resolution.

Kinect hack used to make a ?shadow puppet?

type="html">

Interactive Puppet Prototype with Xbox Kinect from Theo Watson on Vimeo.

I have just seen the Kinect used for some almost holographic effect on a user, and now, here is another hack: shadow puppets.

Somehow, the Kinect is able to sense the lady’s hand, and then match its movements with a CG creation. They even made it so the bird will make a noise with its “mouth” is open.

I wonder what the next big Kinect hack will be.

Calling All Insane Photographers: What are your Strengths and Weaknesses?

type="html">

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein.

albert-einstein.jpg

Albert is so right – yet most of us are satisfied to keep doing the same thing the same way over and over again. As a result we never really improve!

One of the exercises that I do from time to time as part of my business year is a SWOT analysis. The exercise is simple – identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats as they impact your business. They key in it is to do analysis to help identify areas that you can step out and do things differently in.

It struck me this morning as I was working on this that some of it might also be relevant when it comes to our photography. I don’t mean just professional photographers (although it’d be useful to do it on your business too) but in analysing our actual photography.

I think it’d be particularly be useful to look at Strengths and Weaknesses and to devise some ‘next steps’ to help us ensure that we don’t just keep doing the same old things the same way!

Strengths

What are you good at as a photographer?

Most photography enthusiasts that I interact with have some aspect of photography that they are particularly good at.

  • It might be a type of photography that you’re passionate about

  • It could be that you’ve got good gear

  • It could be that you’re good at certain techniques

  • It could be you have a particularly skill (posing, post production etc)

  • It could be you just have a good ‘eye’

  • It could be that you’ve got a good education in and knowledge of photography

You’ll probably have more than one strength.

If you’re struggling to find any at all you might also want to involve others. Ask a friend to take a look at some of your work and tell you what they like about your images.

Knowing your strengths as a photographer is a powerful thing – it will highlight areas that you can build further upon.

Weaknesses

What do you need to work more on as a photographer?

in the same way that we all have strengths – we all have areas in our photography that could do with improvement. Taking a few moments to identify the weaknesses will identify areas that you might need to be a bit more intentional about and work upon.

  • what type of photography do you avoid?

  • what might you need to put more time into researching and educating yourself about?

  • what area of your gear might you need to invest a few dollars in?

  • what techniques could you learn that would be useful?

  • what settings and features of your camera do you need to explore more?

  • what types of shots need more practice?

You’ll probably be able to add to that list and will find multiple areas that need more work. If you can’t think of any – again it could be useful to ask a friend for some honest feedback about your work. You might also want to share a few images in the photography critique area of our forum and ask for feedback too.

What are your Strengths and Weaknesses as a Photographer?

Once you’ve identified some Strengths and Weaknesses the key is to go an extra step and add some ‘next steps’ to what you’ve come up with. Based upon what you’re good at and what you could improve upon identify some goals and objectives to take your photography to the next level.

Remember: this exercise is all about doing things differently – don’t just stop at analysing yourself but committing to make some changes – otherwise, according to Mr Einstein, you’re insane.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a photographer? I’d love to hear about some of them in comments below.
