Sony to double production of image sensors

type="html">

Sony’s recent acquisition of a chip plant from Toshiba will be used to increase Sony’s overall image sensor output two fold. The new factory, which used to make Cell processors for the PlayStation 3, will be transitioned to make image sensors used by Sony and many others. Sony already produces image sensors used by Nikon in most of their DSLRs.

The new plant will employ 9,000 people and will focus on manufacturing of smaller CCD and CMOS sensors used in smartphones and point and shoot cameras. The factory will begin production in the second half of 2011.
